About
In my practice, I manipulate the image through mechanical, chemical,
and transcoding operations, embarking on a quest to uncover its
structure and physicality. My journey began with the study of the
pixel image, known for its infinite flexibility and reconfigurability,
and progressed to exploring the silver image through film-lab
techniques. I develop a language mediated by tools, machines, and
information, maintaining a sensory approach to the textures of moving
images in both Film and Digital Art. My work investigates the
intricate relationship between technology and the living.
I represent
“the image” as a product of an internal and material process. By
confronting audiences with an artificial object that is both final and
reflective of its production marks, I express a longing for
authenticity and challenge the hierarchical valuation of the final
product over its creation process. This approach blends romanticism
with a subtle political statement.
My recent works include interactive
installations where a single spectator engages in a visual dialogue
with the machine. These “conversations” showcase a mysterious ballet
between physical and artificial intelligence, flirting with
transhumanist ideas where body and machine coalesce to create imagery
together.
Growing up in Belgium, the cradle of the European industrial
revolution, specifically in the rural province of Liège, has deeply
influenced my ongoing engagement with "the machine." The environment,
steeped in industrial history with the first European steam engine
used in coal mining, seeded my fascination with materiality and the
valorization of production processes.
My multidisciplinary approach
spans from analog cinema to AI-generated imagery. Early in my career,
I explored the tactile realm of hand-processed analog cinema, creating
grainy, noisy images that highlighted the medium's physicality. A
pivotal moment in 2018 led me to GAN-generated images, collaborating
with a researcher from INRIA, which resulted in AI-generated faces
engraved onto marble. This venture marked a significant shift in my
artistic practice, steering me towards IT and new skillsets.
Three
years later, I emerged as a cyber security bootcamp coach, blending
artistic sensibilities with technical expertise to guide others
through the digital landscape's complexities. Throughout my
transformations, I have retained a poetic sensibility, using
technology to explore the mysteries of human experience. Driven by
curiosity and a commitment to positive impact, my work continues to
evolve, reflecting a deep engagement with both art and technology.
